Kokoro no Kitsune
Chapter One: Begin the Uzumaki Chronicles
Uzumaki Naruto was quite the individual. He wasn’t quite the prankster as his counterpart was in another universe, but he did play the occasional prank. There was never any evidence pointing towards him, but it was a surety. But because no one could prove it, Naruto was never punished for the pranks. But there was another thing for sure.
Naruto was certifiably insane.
He acted normal, but it wasn’t so much as a mask as something he thought he was supposed to act like. Everyone called him deadlast and he supposed he should act stupid. Maybe he’d surprised them later on.
He hated the Ninja Academy. He wanted to be a ninja all right, but the place reminded him too much of the Academy. Some areas too sterile, too much in the same formation…
His eyes caught sight of Iruka, the only teacher that at least acted civil with him. Though there was Mizuki, whom Naruto knew still struggled between thinking Naruto as a human being and then trapped thinking Naruto was Kyuubi incarnate. Even after that little encounter…
“Iruka-sensei!” Not as loud as his counterpart, and definitely less obnoxious. The Academy stripped that out of him a long time ago.
“Naruto, shouldn’t you be in class?” Iruka scowled, looking exasperated.
‘You hate me, don’t you? Despite trying so hard to be civil, you can’t distinguish me from the Kyuubi.’
Naruto smiled serenely, “I have to meet the Hokage right now…I’m excused from class.”
“Alright, just don’t forget to make up today.”
“Hai, Iruka-sensei. I won’t.”
Naruto began to walk away, heading to the familiar place that was one of his few sanctuaries.
He entered into the Hokage’s office, past the ANBU guards and seated himself in front of the desk.
“How are you doing, Naruto?” the Hokage’s kind face relaxed him.
“Fine, Hokage-jiji. Where’s he?”
He being the therapist.
“Not today. I was just thinking perhaps you should learn some other jutsus. I know how your bunshin doesn’t quite ‘make the cut’. Mizuki told me.”
“Ah, my tenant’s chakra is the problem. It’s causing me to put in too much extra chakra than is needed for the clone jutsu.”
“I see. Yes, I figured that would be the problem. That is why you can learn the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu instead. I’m going to let you borrow this scroll only for today. Learn as much as you can.”
Naruto opened his mouth to answer and he found he couldn’t formulate the words to fit his thoughts. He struggled and then spoke, “Simplicity endeavors in mental prognosis for such divisions.”
Sandaime looked uncertain for a second, not quite understanding.
“The pie is easy,” he knew that wasn’t quite the expression, but his mind didn’t want to translate into laymen terms and that was conflicting with his communication.
The old man smiled sadly at him.
“I understand, Naruto.”
Naruto gritted his teeth in frustration.

“How is he functioning?”
“The subject is responding to pain still. Shall we up the electrical dosage?”
“Go 60 bolts. I don’t want to rely on the Kyuubi’s healing powers.”
“But aren’t we testing his endurance to pain?”
“No, the goal is to make him immune to pain. We’ve done testing on his healing. His healing rate is about 56%. Depending on how severe the injury is, it’ll be healed on the duration of a short time. Whatever ails him will quickly be healed over night. However, there are still some things we want to test out that deals with his healing abilities…but the Council wishes to expand on that later when we are sure of his healing.
“Keep in mind that the secondary priority is to prod his reading abilities out. We want a Reader, not just a guinea pig.”
“I understand that, sir. So we should go on with the surgery as planned?”
“Cut his amygdale out as soon as possible. We need results quickly.”
“Of course.”
Naruto bolted up into his bed, having felt his horror fading with his dreams. He clenched his eyes closed, willing the images away faster.
“The stench of death hovers over the horizon, disregarding the flames,” he muttered.
He sighed and got ready for the Genin exam.
Once in the Ninja Academy, Naruto set off towards a seat next to Sasuke. He had already sat down when two girls barreled into the classroom loudly. Recognizing them, he winced and stood up, heading instead towards a seat next to Hinata.
“Morning, Hyuuga-san,” he greeted her, ignoring the embarrassment the girl started to experience at the sight of him.
“M-mornign, Naruto-kun,” she shyly replied.
He flashed her a smile and faced forward once more. Iruka and the other teachers came in, and they started. It wasn’t long until it was Naruto’s turn.
“Alright, transform.”
And so Naruto turned into Iruka, and then Mizuki. He scored perfect on the shuriken and kunai throwing, and his written exam came back as perfect. The time for the clone test came and Naruto tilted his head.
“I can’t do bunshin.”
Naruto headed over to Mizuki and handed over the Forbidden Scroll, the other scowling but taking it. Mizuki understood what it was and why Naruto had it.
“But I can do something else. Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!”
Three solid, perfect copies of him appeared. Iruka and the others gaped, Mizuki’s mouth slightly opened even though he had suspected it.
“Does that count?”
Iruka grudgingly handed a hitai-ate over. Naruto accepted it, bowed and turned to leave when he froze.
‘Stupid demon shouldn’t have passed!’
‘Kuso! Now he’ll learn how to kill us all!’
‘I can’t believe I passed him…’
The thoughts flooded into his head and his hand tightened around the forehead protector. He bolted from the room, unaware that he was being followed.
“Naruto, hold on!”
Iruka and Mizuki were right behing him, hard-pressed to keep up despite being chuunins against a newly-made genin. They closed in when Naruto collapsed, looking like he was having a panic attack.
“Naruto, what’s going on?” Iruka asked, having never seen the blonde like this. For once, he did not think of Naruto as the Nine-tails but as an actual person.
Mizuki’s doubts were decreasing just a little more.
“Naruto?”
The boy was muttering under his breath, curling into a ball.
“Too many thoughts entering your head, Naruto-kun? Just focus on my thoughts, hold onto my hand,” Mizuki said, confusing Iruka even more. “Push the others back.”
Naruto gripped Mizuki’s hand tightly, his shaking slowing down.
“Hate, so much hate…only a boy, but should be a puppet. He doesn’t know…he doesn’t know…”
“Naruto, snap out of it! Don’t go down that road again!”
Iruka watched as Mizuki slowly coaxed Naruto back to them.
“I’m…okay. Really.”
And Naruto refused to say any more on that matter.

Since then, Iruka’s kindness was more genuine and easier to give to Naruto. The chuunin didn’t know what was going on, but he was sure Mizuki did. And he was going to pry it out. After all, Mizuki had a big mouth.
An incident occurred just earlier in the week, right after the Genin Exam, where Naruto had met the Sandaime’s grandson. What a sad event…
“You! You were the one who tripped me, weren’t you?”
Naruto raised an eyebrow, staring at the little boy who had just trampled inside. Shrugging, he ignored the kid and walked away.
“Hey, don’t ignore me! The Hokage’s my grandpa. Hn, now you definitely won’t ignore me.”
But Naruto just kept walking away. Konohamaru blinked in surprised before running after the blonde and went to tackle him.
Naruto felt something click and he went on automatic, grabbing Konohamaru’s scarf and then wrapping it again around the kid’s neck. He started to pull when the Sandaime interrupted his mindless haze.
“Naruto! Why don’t you go treat yourself to some ramen?”
Naruto pulled away quickly, a grin appeared and he started walking away again.
Between Iruka and the new gaki stalker, Naruto was hoping his team wouldn’t have too much excitement in the beginning.
Then he got stuck with brooding Uchiha and Uchiha #1 stalker. At least it wasn’t too much excitement. Hopefully, their jounin leader would be better.
As soon as they had to wait for two hours, Naruto knew their jounin wasn’t normal. And that he and his team wasn’t going to be a nice, normal, little team like every other genin team.
His fears were confirmed when their jounin appeared and said, “My first impression of you guys…is that I hate you.”
‘You hate us because you don’t want to be stuck with brats.’
Naruto rolled his eyes and went to the roof.
“Alright, introduce yourselves. Talk about your likes, dislikes, hobbies, dreams…”
“Eh, sensei! Can you provide an example?” Sakura asked.
“Uh…no.”
The pink-haired girl scowled. “Well, my name’s Haruno Sakura. I like…um…my hobby is to…my dreams is…I dislike Ino-pig!”
The jounin looked slightly exasperated.
“My name is Uchiha Sasuke. I don’t really like anything, I dislike everything else, and my ambition is to kill a certain person.”
Naruto cringed. ‘ ‘An avenger.’ ’
He looked over at the jounin, who looked like he had expected Sasuke to say something like that. Interesting, they both thought the same thing.
“Alright, the out-of-place blonde next.”
Naruto scowled, but went on. “My name is Uzumaki Naruto. My likes, dislikes, hobbies, and dreams are of no one’s business unless I trust them enough to know.”
And he stayed quiet. The other three stared at him before the jounin coughed to break the silence.
“None of you are genin yet, so be prepared to take the real Genin Exam tomorrow. Less than a third of the graduating class is allowed to be genin, and the test has a 66% failure rate. Don’t eat breakfast, you’ll puke. Any questions? No? See you tomorrow at eight.”
He disappeared in a puff of smoke, rattling the things off without letting them get in a word or question. Just eager to get the hell away from them.
Damn. Why couldn’t Naruto have failed again and waited next year?
