Chapter One: Jounin Naruto
“Now, Sakura, I want you to move closer. Good, now Kakashi. Come here next to Sakura,” Naruto instructed.
Sixteen year old Hatake Kakashi was a chuunin along with his teammate Haruno Sakura. His jounin sensei was Uzumaki Naruto.
Kakashi was in love with Naruto.
“Naruto-sensei, anou sa, what are we doing?” Sakura asked.
“I'll be teaching you how to create your own jutsu,” Naruto gave them one of his trademark fox grins.
Naruto began telling them to search for ideas, eventually handing them a slip of paper. Kakashi found his affinity was with lightning.
“Naruto-sensei, are you busy?” Kakashi hid his hope.
“I'm sorry, Kakashi. I was going to meet with Obito at the Academy. Unless you can wait?”
Of course he could.
“Naru-chan, who's the gaki?” Obito drawled, a teasing glint in his eye.
Uchiha Obito, best friend and former teammate of Naruto. Obito taught at the Academy as a chuunin instructor on ninjutsu, and had been doing so for the past year. Even jealous of Obito’s relationship with his sensei, Kakashi still felt guilty of taking away Obito’s ninja career and his eye.
If he hadn’t been trying to show off for Naruto…
“You know Kakashi, Obito,” Naruto rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, yeah. Just messing with him,” Obito grinned.
“Hello, Obito-san,” Kakashi bowed politely.
“How are you, Kakashi-bozu?”
Kakashi refrained from scowling but answered nonetheless.
“Okay, Obito-san. I’m just here to wait for Naruto-sensei. He’s going to help me with me with my elemental affinity.”
“Remember when we had to do that, Naru-chan? We had a hell of a time doing it too. Fun, but difficult. I almost kicked Itachi-kun when I heard he had fire and was on his way to mastering it,” Obito chortled.
“Well, Itachi is supposed to be your clan’s prodigy after all. It’s to be expected,” Naruto snorted, rolling his eyes at his friend.
“I’m surrounded by stupid prodigies! First you, then Kakashi-bozu, and now Itachi! Sasuke’s on his way, and I bet the little one coming up will be another obnoxious prodigy,” Obito pouted.
“Ah, but you love us all the same, right? Especially me,” Naruto snickered, dropping an arm around Obito’s shoulders.
“Bleh! Yeah, yeah! Don’t get it into your head. Especially you, Kakashi-bozu!” Obito mocked-glared at him.
Kakashi’s lips twitched upwards under his mask. Despite everything, he did sort of like Obito. As long as he and Naruto were just friends…
Suddenly a hawk flew overhead, Obito and Naruto freezing. The two stared into the skies, watching it circle around once before heading in another direction.
“Anou, Kakashi, I can’t help you today. Something came up. I promise I’ll try to help you tomorrow okay?” Naruto said seriously.
Kakashi frowned, but nodded. Naruto did promise, and it was fact that Naruto did everything he could to keep his promises.
Naruto leaned over and kissed his eye, waving before him and Obito both disappeared.
Kakashi’s frown turned into a smile, his body automatically moving to go to the Hatake estate.

“The naming process should be after I’ve developed the technique, so that could wait. But I have think how to do it. It would be cool if I could have chakra become visible, and have it running up and down my arm. Something like that,” Kakashi thought aloud, eating the food he had prepared for himself.
He missed Naruto cooking for him.
“Huh, I’m…a little sleepy,” Kakashi yawned and was about to pull up his mask when his head just laid onto the table, and he slept.
“W-where am I?” Kakashi lifted his headband, already deciding it was best to use his gifted eye.
Sharingan activated, Kakashi tensed. He looked to be in some kind of apartment.
“Who are you?” a familiar voice asked him. It was familiar, but not quite.
Kakashi whirled around and immediately stood in a stance, when he stared into shocked eyes that probably mirrored his own.
“Um, I’m you? I guess…” Kakashi answered.
The older man blinked in surprise. “Sou ka, but what’s going on? Wait, how old are you?”
“Well, I’m sixteen. How about you?”
“Well, if you’re sixteen, you should be ANBU by now. I’m 26, ten years your junior.”
Kakashi colored. He should’ve been in ANBU by then, but…
“Anou sa, I’m not ANBU. I’m still chuunin,” Kakashi admitted.
That froze his older self. “That’s not right. I was genin by five, chuunin at six, and then jounin at nine. I reached ANBU when I was thirteen.”
His older self glared and looked suspiciously at him.
“Hold on! There has to be something going on, I know I should be ANBU by now, but I haven’t tried going up. I don’t understand how your history is different.”
Older Kakashi relaxed a fraction, but didn’t seem willing to let down his guard.
“Why don’t we tell each other our own history and then compare?” Kakashi tried.
“Alright, I’ll go first,” the older one relented.
“Wait, what should we call ourselves?”
“Well, I guess I’ll call you Kakashi-kun and you can call me Kakashi-san.”
After older Kakashi had said his piece, Kakashi stared at him strangely.
“Obito-san was my teammate?” Kakashi-kun blinked in surprise.
“Yes…why? Is he different to you?” the other Kakashi asked.
“Anou, Obito-san is Naruto-sensei’s teammate and a chuunin instructor at the Academy.”
It was Kakashi-san’s turn to blink in surprise, “What? Naruto? Why don’t you start from the start?”
“Okay. Um, like you I became a genin at five, and then chuunin at six. But I didn’t want to…move up from chuunin just yet.”
Kakashi-san had a feeling that his younger self had meant to say something else, but didn’t press. Not yet, at least.
“My teammates are Uchiha Sasuke and Haruno Sakura. My sensei is Uzumaki Naruto,” Kakashi-kun didn’t notice the small smile on his unmasked lips at the mention of Naruto’s name, but the other Kakashi did. Still, he said nothing.
“I got my Sharingan eye the same way you did, but Obito-san wasn’t crushed under a boulder. Instead of Rin-san, who’s Naruto-sensei’s other teammate, it was Sakura who was kidnapped. But she’s okay too. And Sasuke is fine and a good teammate, but not really social. Itachi isn’t a missing-nin, but ANBU captain still.
“Let’s see, Yondaime-sama is alive and still Hokage. Naruto-sensei is his son, by the way. Kyuubi no Youko is still sealed inside Naruto-sensei, but everyone thinks he’s a hero for helping to seal away Kyuubi and willing to be a jinchuuriki. I think that’s all the differences.”
Kakashi-san nodded. Some things sounded impossible, but no more impossible than the fact that his younger self may also be from an alternate timeline.
“Anou sa, Kakashi-san, is Naruto-sensei really twelve here?” Kakashi-kun asked, suddenly shy.
“Naruto? Yeah, he’s twelve right now.”
“O-oh…”
“Why?” Kakashi-san prodded. Naruto seemed to be involved in all the little unconscious gestures Kakashi-kun made throughout their conversation.
“U-um…no reason. J-just…no one likes him, right?”
Kakashi-san shrugged, a little confused.
“Okay then…do you know if Naruto-sensei likes other…guys?”
It clicked.
“Kakashi-kun, do you have a crush on Naruto?”
Kakashi-kun colored, “Don’t say that aloud!” he snapped at his older self.
Kakashi-san grimaced mentally. He had just gotten Naruto into the hospital after the failed Sasuke retrieval mission. It wouldn’t help Naruto to have Kakashi’s younger self clinging onto the blond.
“And it’s not a crush. I’m in love with Naruto-sensei,” Kakashi-kun glared.
“Don’t call him that either. Naruto isn’t your sensei here. It’ll only confuse him and make him feel weird.”
Kakashi-kun’s glare intensified, “How come you call Naruto-sen –I mean, Naru…Naru-chan, Naruto?” Kakashi-kun’s face became red again.
“Well, I can’t call him sensei seeing as how he’s my student and I’m older than him.”
“Then why don’t you use an attachment to his name?” Kakashi-kun snapped at his older self again.
“Well, I’m…not really that close to him,” Kakashi admitted softly, realizing the fact.
“You shouldn’t use his name so familiarly then! Only those close to Naru-chan can drop the honorific!”
Kakashi-san groaned. What a mess he had gotten himself mixed up in.

Naruto stayed tense throughout the briefing, listening intently to his father’s words.
Something bad was coming up and they all had to be prepared for it.
He barely acknowledged Obito’s hand on his shoulder, mentally preparing himself. If trouble was coming, trouble that they didn’t think they could withstand, things were going to get pretty rough.
“Naruto, you should relax. It wouldn’t do for you to be all agitated,” Obito whispered.
“I know, but I can’t help it. When something bad is going to happen, I always get antsy. And the worse it is, the worse I am.”
“So it’s that bad?”
“Hai. I think we’re going to have to ask for the Kyuubi’s help.”
“Shimatta. I didn’t think it was going to be that bad. Are you ready to ask for the fox’s help?”
“The kitsune is going to help us if it wants any measure of freedom,” Naruto grounded out.
Naruto tensed again, his mind flickering back to Kakashi for some reason. He caught a glimpse of him with what seemed to be an older looking Kakashi in his mind’s eye, before the picture was gone. Instead, he was left with a terrible feeling and his thoughts centered on Kakashi.
In fact, he couldn’t steer his thoughts away from his silver-haired student.
“Obito, I have to check on Kakashi. For some reason, I’m feeling really worried about him right now.”
“Alright, be careful. I hope that brat’s alright and it’s just a false alarm.”
“So do I,” Naruto flinched.
Naruto’s premonitions always came out true.
The blond jounin discreetly fled the room, speeding across roofs to his student’s estate. He hoped against everything that Kakashi was okay.
‘Kami-sama, let him be okay.’
Naruto felt empty as soon as the Hatake estate came into view. Speeding up even more, Naruto went through the front door without any hassle. Kakashi had always told him where the spare key was.
Feeling himself grow cold and goose bumps rising on his skin, Naruto prepared himself to look around.
And he looked around an empty house.
