Chapter One: Throwback
“Are you sure about this, Naruto?”
“Yes.”
“The others won’t be happy about this.”
“I’m sure they’ll be fine.”
“Fine.”
“What do you mean Naruto requested a team transfer?” Kakashi scowled from underneath his mask.
Tsunade sighed, “Exactly that.”
Sasuke and Sakura glared at the Hokage openly, the anger barely shown in Kakashi’s lone eye.
“Why did you permit it, Tsunade-sama?” Sakura demanded, barely remembering to add the –sama.
“Because!” Tsunade snapped at them. “He had all the right reasons and by law if I see them serious enough, I’m to grant him permission.”
“Can’t you at least tell us where he is? Who’s his new sensei? Anything?” Sakura pleaded.
“He’s on a long mission with his sensei. He’s been gone for a month now.”
“What?!” All of Team Seven actually yelled in unison.
“Well, Naruto asked for the transfer at the beginning of the month and his sensei immediately took him on a mission.”
They hadn’t noticed his disappearance until then…
“What kind of mission?” Sasuke narrowed his eyes.
Tsunade hesitated, “It’s…S-rank.”
“What the hell?!” Kakashi exploded. No one in that room had ever seen the jounin that way; it was so surprising that even the two genin had forgotten about Naruto’s new situation.
“Ara, get out, all of you! I’m sick of hearing crap! Just hurry it up and get out!” Tsunade yelled, discreetly trying to get them out of there.
Sasuke narrowed his eyes, “You’re trying to get rid of us.”
Just when Tsunade was going to offer some kind of excuse, the door opened and Orochimaru strolled in, Kabuto and Naruto in toll.
Wait…Naruto?
“What’s going on?” Sakura screeched.
Naruto avoided looking at them, staying close to Orochimaru and Kabuto.
“Tsunade-hime, the mission was a success. Is there anything else?” Orochimaru smirked, pointedly ignoring the others in the room.
“Hebi-teme,” Sasuke growled, narrowing his eyes at the man who had once used him.
“I can’t right now, Orochimaru. The others…” she swept her eyes towards Naruto’s former team.
“It doesn’t matter,” Orochimaru cut off, growing impatient.
She pinched the bridge of her nose, “Alright, give me mission details later when we’re alone. Tell me about Naruto’s progress so I can decide whether or not it was a good decision to put him with you. It’s probably best, considering Team Seven’s presence. They are, in a way, involved in this.”
“He’s fine. During the course of the month, I was able to teach him quite a lot of jutsu and while he’s good, he has yet to fully master them. But he learns fast. I’m satisfied with my choice.”
The returned smirk was indication that Orochimaru was more than satisfied.
“Wait, hold on. What’s going on?” Sakura cut in.
“Quiet, girl,” Orochimaru fastened his eyes in a frosty stare towards her.
“Sakura, Orochimaru is Naruto’s new sensei,” Tsunade tried to say patiently.
“What’s the decision?” Orochimaru sneered, tired of hearing rabble.
“I suppose it’s been good. Naruto, how do you feel?”
Naruto kept avoiding the stares of his former comrades, choosing to answer and stare straight into Tsunade’s eyes.
“I’m doing fine. Orochimaru-sama has been teaching me excellently. I’m happy with my progress,” he said simply.
Tsunade raised an eyebrow at the –sama, looking at Orochimaru. His smirk grew.
“Alright, it’s been finalized. Naruto, your new sensei is Orochimaru. Since you’re being apprenticed, you don’t need a team. However, for the Chuunin exams, any assistance Team Seven may need, and for whatever reason Orochimaru is incapable of taking you, you will join Team Seven.”
The Oro-Naru-Kabu group nodded and was going to leave when Orochimaru turned.
“Tsunade, is there any more S-ranks?”
“One…why?”
“We’ll take it.”
Tsunade glared, “I’m uncomfortable letting a genin on S-ranks. I already let Naruto go with you on the last one, his first S-rank mission and his first mission with you. I think once is enough.”
“Tsunade-hime,” here Orochimaru’s voice grew cold, “I told you. I take only S-ranks. Naruto-kun will do the same. I refuse to let him do idle work and baby-sit him. No apprentice of mine is going to be doing foolish things.”
It became a face-off between Tsunade and Orochimaru.
“Keep him close,” she growled, her eyes still narrowed.
“He knows what to do by now. Apparently, a month was all I needed with him,” he said bored.
The group swept out of the room, Naruto still avoiding their eyes.
Team Seven raced after them, yelling out to Naruto.
“Hey! Hold on!”
But instead of Naruto stopping, Orochimaru whispered into Kabuto’s ear and he stopped as the other two went on.
“Hey, where are they going? We want to talk to Naruto!” Sakura continued yelling.
“They’re going straight to their mission. And you had better stop trying to talk to Naruto, because Naruto is under express orders to not communicate with you in any way,” he sneered at them.
“That’s bull,” she kept talking. She was going to say more when Kakashi placed a restraining hand on her shoulder.
“I don’t think that’s possible. Not if Naruto’s going to have to work with us at times,” Kakashi retorted.
Kabuto rolled his eyes, “Naruto will find a way to heed Orochimaru’s rules. He’s smart, after all.”
The former Sound-nin did a few hand seals and left.

It was dumb luck that they had an A-rank mission at the end of the week. At least that’s what they wanted everyone to think. Tsunade had done them a big favor, without even saying it, by granting them a mission that would require more than they had on the team. Therefore, Naruto would have to accompany them.
By then, Orochimaru had Naruto attend more than six S-rank missions with the sannin. Kabuto went on half of those.
“Alright, Orochimaru has already briefed Naruto-kun so I’ll just start you all off. You’ll see Kazahana Koyuki in Snow Country again. She has requested body guards, specifically Team Seven. A rebellion is being formed on the outskirts of the country, so you’ll have to be careful of rogue militia. And –oh! Naruto! You’re here.”
They turned to see Naruto in some kind of military outfit.
They blinked in astonishment.
“Ah, what are you wearing?” Kakashi said for the team.
“Ara, on the last mission in Amestris, we had that infiltration mission and they let me keep my military uniform. Orochimaru-sama told me to wear it for now,” Naruto spoke directly to Tsunade.
“Don’t ignore us, baka!” Sakura yelled, about to punch Naruto’s head.
“Tsunade-sama, when shall the team leave?” Naruto continued, stepping forward and missing the punch. He still had not acknowledged Team Seven’s presence.
“Now,” the blonde woman said in wonder, staring at the tense group.
Naruto started walking out and the rest of the team ran after him. Immediately, Naruto took out a scroll and summoned a pack out of it. He put it on his shoulders and kept walking.
“Naru-baka, we haven’t even packed yet!” Sakura yelled.
“Hey, dobe, don’t think that just because you’re being trained by that hebi-teme you’re better than the rest of us. I’m still stronger than you,” Sasuke said after her.
They had made it a ways out of the village before they realized they hadn’t stopped Naruto at all. But then he stopped and turned, that familiar grin –though softer –on his face.
“I missed you guys,” and then he kept walking.
They stared in surprise at his back, feeling happy that they had caught a glance of the old Naruto.
Despite that, they felt like they would see fewer glimpses. And the feeling made them cold.
“Why does it feel like Naruto-kun is being taken further and further away from us?” Sakura said softly.
“He’s…so distant now. He’s not my dobe,” Sasuke murmured to himself.
Kakashi just stared after his former student in remorse.
“You two go back and fill your packs. I have mine already so I’ll try to slow him down. Apparently, outside the village, he’s freer to talk to.”
“Hai, sensei!” the two nodded and ran back.
Kakashi sighed before going after the last one in the group.
